Hurricane Michael

Michael grew into a major hurricane and hit the Panhandle, devastating parts of Mexico Beach. On Oct. 7, Tropical Depression 14 became Tropical Storm Michael. A day later, Michael became the seventh hurricane of the season.

Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency for the Panhandle and Big Bend regions along Florida’s Gulf Coast. On Oct. 10, Michael made landfall near Mexico Beach with 155-mph winds, bringing life-threatening storm surges.

The storm was the first category 4 storm to make landfall in the continental U.S. in October since Hazel in 1954; Michael was the third-largest hurricane to make landfall in the U.S.; and it was the first category 4 hurricane to make landfall in the Panhandle on record.

Florida’s death toll from Hurricane Michael grew to 43.

Michael’s hurricane-force wind field was about 6,361 square miles.Maximum sustained winds reached 155 mph during its Oct. 7-12 span.

California Wild Fires

The death toll of the wildfire in Butte County, Calif. climbed to 83 nearly two weeks after the blaze began, bringing the statewide total of wildfire deaths to 86.

The blaze had spread across 153,336 acres and destroyed over 13,500 residential buildings since it’ss ignition on the morning of November 8.

President Trump visited California and met with Governor Jerry Brown and Governor-elect Gavin Newsom where he said it’s time “to pull together for the people of California.
